Barn Quilts of Carver County Catches Geocachers’ Interest

The Barn Quilts of Carver County, MN, a public art project, started in 2011, in conjunction with the Arts Consortium of Carver County, has recently caught the attention of a group of geocachers.

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure-hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Many people use their smart phones to find geocaches. Others use a GPS to find them. There are more than 3 million active geocaches worldwide. Geocaches are hidden in 191 different countries on all seven continents (even Antarctica)! More than 642 million “Found it” and “Event Attended” logs have been recorded since the game started in 2000.There are many different types of geocaches. There is also a Minnesota Geocaching Association (MnGCA).

Last Fall, a Barn Quilt Geocaching “Adventure Lab” was started by Mary Purdham and her husband David of Eden Prairie. A Geocaching Adventure Lab is a new app and platform from the team at Geocaching HQ that allows an individual to create, play and share location-based experiences and games. The Geocaching Adventure Lab app guides players through the process of finding clues, solving puzzles, and completing Adventures one location at a time. This type of geocaching exploded in 2020 as a great past-time during the pandemic. Not everyone in the geocaching community can “create” an Adventure Lab (“AL”).  You must be awarded the opportunity to create one.

The Purdham’s were looking for something fun that was different from historical tours across the various metro cities that were becoming widely popular. They created the Barn Quilts of Carver County Adventure Lab and showcased five different barn quilts. Approximately 40 groups have visited the Carver County barn quilts since the Adventure Lab was created last September 2020.

Participants found their “cache”, took pictures, shared them with families, reminisced about farming and quilting and enjoyed visits with the farmers. They learned about the history of the farm, the barn quilts and readily enjoyed the outdoor gallery of art. To learn more about the Barn Quilts of Carver County Geocaching Adventure Lab, please visit https://labs.geocaching.com/goto/barn_quilts

The Barn Quilts of Carver County, MN continues to promote tourism bringing state-wide individuals to the County to enjoy and see what all is offered. Watch for the Barn Quilt Tours this summer, where Community, Countryside and Culture meet! https://barnquiltsofcarvercountymn.com

For more information regarding the Barn Quilts of Carver County, MN, please contact Janet Fahey, Tour Director at 612-382-4512 or Barb Hone, Author, at 612-799-8208.

ArtMatters Newsletter September

ArtMatters Newsletter September 2020 | Vol 10, Issue 9

Greetings,
We want to share what the board has been experiencing, planning and developing during these past few months of the overall shifting in how we as an arts organization can serve our members and residents in Carver County. We have had many discussions in changing our environment and needs due to COVID-19. We have had significant decreases in available funds due to event cancellations and we are functioning through reduced volunteer hours. Our desire is to keep consistency for members. Our goal is to bring more online projects on board, and also to reignite our programming through exhibits with social distancing, online class/learning opportunities in the works, retail functioning with social distancing and online sales in place, etc…. We have added very talented new board members to our already outstanding well placed team and we are excited for the new future in the new normal.

Our organization is capable and positive as we react, respond, re-strategize, recover and realize what is needed to stay connected to our member audience and our communities during this time. We are striving to build increased connectivity and economic strength through supporting our member artists, our members and our communities. With this said, you will be  one of the first to know where this will take us.  Watch for details to come….

As always, we welcome any questions, comments and/or feedback you might have. Please feel free to contact us at info@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Thank you,
Cynthia Anderson, President ACCC

To kick off the new season, we give you the 48 Hour Prose/Poetry Contest for all ages participation: starting September 14, participants will have 48 hours (2 days) to complete an original prose or poetry piece and submit it to the Literary Committee via email at literary@artsofcarvercounty.org. Prose works limited to 600 words, poetry 300. All submissions must be in by 11:59pm September 16th, and the top 3 pieces will be featured on the ACCC website/social medical pages. Until then, Happy Writing!  Literary Liaison Amy Stender literary@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Art Tourism/Barn Quilts of Carver County

A second barn quilt book has been released, Barn Quilts and Carver County, MN. It documents the expansion of the Barn Quilt Trail in Carver County. Now, 21 more Barn Quilts, all commissioned art, have been added to this “free, open-air art gallery.”
With Jerry’s stunning photography, the Barn Quilts’ creative designs and colors pop off the pages. The stories, photos, and text come from interviews by Barb Hone with each of the barn owners. Community is celebrated. Turning pages, you will visit each of the 11 towns in the County. With snapshots you will explore their highlights and the landscapes in between. Agriculture is emphasized. With photography, we carry you through this rich farmland. You will see crops and machinery. You will see seasons.
Join us for the Book Signing, September 19, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at At the Farm, 8880 HWY 5, Waconia. The book is also available on our website www.barnquiltsofccmn.com, Amazon and Etsy.

The Barn Quilts of Carver County, a public art project, started in 2011. The Arts Consortium of Carver County was the fiscal agent and continues to be supportive of this widely popular outdoor gallery of art.  The project is celebrating its 10 Year Anniversary this year and the newly released book is a tribute to the ongoing success. Barn Quilt Tours will continue post COVID-19 and continue to bring statewide guests to Carver County.  Plan to join us for future tours, where Community, Countryside and Culture meet!

Active Literary Committee

The Literary Committee is pleased to welcome Amy Stender as the next Literary Liaison for ACCC.  Amy brings a long list of accomplishments as a fiction writer and is eager to hear from you about your ideas for activities involving and supporting authors during the pandemic. She will be working with a committee that consists of local authors Jim Kane, Sheri Kramer, Anne Jackson, Mona Smith, and Susan Coultrap-McQuin. If you have suggestions for Amy or would like to join the Literary Committee to help plan and host events, please contact Amy at literary@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Sincere Thanks

We want to thank Susan Coultrap-McQuin for her unmeasurable contributions to the ACCC while serving on the board. Her term as board member included roles as Secretary, serving as the Literary Liaison and being on the Operations Committee. While this may seem like a lot, it does not even come close to accounting for her dogged determination to ensure the highest standards were always met in everything she did, her unflagging energy at moving the ACCC forward and upward and her wise counsel in guiding the arts in Carver County. Susan, from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you.

Art Tourism/Barn Quilts of Carver County

Recently, a vibrant, new barn quilt has been installed in Watertown, MN. Kathy McCann is the owner of the farm and the quilt pattern is the Mariner’s Cross (also called the Nautical Star), which symbolizes “hope” and “a fresh start”. The design is a symbol of a sailor always able to find his way home.

Being the first barn quilt in Watertown, we have met with the Mayor, Steve Washburn. He was very interested in the art and the economic development aspects of the barn quilts in Carver County. When COVID-19 permits, Coach buses will again be filled with 55 enthusiastic art and agriculture-lovers. Tours will include Watertown and guests will be having lunch at a local eatery. Watch for the Barn Quilt Tours, where Community, Countryside and Culture meet!

NEW! Student Memberships

Hello, I’m Mary Williamson, a new ACCC Board Member. As we are navigating the new ways of doing things in the ACCC, one area remains the same. Membership and who that is made of? As I was accepted onto the Board a few months ago, I was simultaneously working on an Art Membership for my own Studio, with a strong focus on young adults. A passion of mine is teaching, especially youth. In the ACCC the focus on new members, art enthusiasts and artists alike, are geared more towards adults. The young adults have not had a seat at the table, yet.

During our recent Board meeting, I proposed inviting young adults to join the ACCC in a Student Membership. The Board met the idea with enthusiasm, and we are working on adding this option for students between the ages of 14 and 18.

This demographic is currently under-served in the real world in the area of support and opportunity outside of their high school environment. With the membership, they would have an opportunity to not only invest in something in the collective sense but invest in themselves. They would be able to join at $25/year, we are working on determining an amount of in person volunteer time they would serve each year as well as the perks – low entry fee for first art exhibit for instance.

In the short term, the thought behind this is to give passionate young adults a chance to be a part of something bigger than themselves, allow them to participate fully in the organization, see how they can influence and affect others with their art and reap the benefits of personal growth and life skills. In the long term, many of these young adults hold skills that we can only aspire to. Having them become full members at this younger stage in life will allow them to grow, participate and share their skill sets and experiences with the ACCC and more importantly remain in the ACCC as their passion for art potentially becomes careers in art and therefore become vested supporters of the ACCC hopefully for life.

This is an untapped demographic with so much potential, I will be working on some marketing to get the word out, share with the public, home and non-traditional schools as soon as possible. I am excited about what they will bring to the ACCC table, there is so much to learn from them, as well, we as a strong, supportive community can mentor and support them.  Just thinking about the new technology that the young artists are growing up using boggles my mind, with the pace of change they will be a great asset to our Membership. If you would like to discuss this with me, please send an email to membership@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Summer Festivals
The annual ArtStock Art, Wine & Music Festival at Parley Lake Winery was held on July 13 & 14.  This popular event featured opportunities to purchase great art and to enjoy fine wine, food and music.  In honor of the Woodstock 50th anniversary, a 60’s theme featured artists and guests embracing their groovy-ness! This year we had a hot, sunny day to get together and celebrate art in the community, and we are so grateful to our amazing volunteers who made the day especially enjoyable. Thank you to all the artists and booth sponsors – everyone had a wonderful day and we can’t wait to start planning for next year. Special thanks to Steve Zeller and our host Parley Lake Winery.

Literary News

The ACCC Literary Committee hosted a Haiku Jam at ArtStock at Parley Lake Winery on July 13-14.  At the end of the day, there were 44 new haikus!  Congratulations to all who wrote one.  You will have a second chance at the Victoria Fine Art Fair on August 3.  Watch for our sign and try your hand at poetry about the day.

The Literary Committee also hosted an open reading entitled Writers Read Water and Waves on Thursday, July 18 in the Arts Center.  Fourteen authors from across the county read a wide variety of poetry and prose related to the theme of water.  We had about 25 people in the audience, enjoying the art on the walls and the literature they heard read.

Finally, ACCC and the Literary Committee announces a new initiative to display short literary works along with art in the Members’ Show.  Any writer who wishes to display a poem, flash fiction, or another short literary work, prepared for hanging on a wall, can submit it under the “Other” category in the Members’ Show guidelines.  Your writing must use at least 16 font size.  Follow the guidelines for artist submissions in terms of timing and other requirements on the ACCC Members’ Show submission page.  If you have questions, contact Susan Coultrap-McQuin, Literary Liaison on the ACCC Board for further details.  Deadline August 19 for submissions.

New Look at the Arts Center

“…time for a cool change, I know that it’s time for a cool change…” Little River Band 1979.

Change. That’s exactly what is happening in our Arts Center Gallery and Retail space right now. Board member Amy Rottunda has stepped up to lead the retail committee, and boy is this team excited! You may have already noticed a whole new “vibe” in the Center recently. If you haven’t been by in a while, we hope you’ll come in and check out the great new volunteer desk where our amazing gallery team helps everyone to have a great experience at the Arts Center.  New fixtures are coming soon that will allow us to offer even more great locally crafted goods and represent more artists in the space.

So, come on downstairs and cool off! We’ve got amazing original work pieces that would be ideal wedding and anniversary gifts, a new line of greeting cards, jewelry and some new pottery pieces.

Business Skills Classes for Artists

Hello! We wanted to share this opportunity with our Members and Supporters. The Carver County Library has put together an amazing list of Business Skills Classes for Artists. Could You Volunteer 2-3 Hours of Your Time?

Arts Center Volunteers: We always welcome new volunteers to help us in the Arts Center for a few hours every month. We will provide training by experienced volunteers before you will be asked to work on your own. You can always choose to work with others. It is fun and supports the arts in our county. Shifts are 2 or 3 hours. If you are interested, please fill out the Volunteer Form.

Victoria Fine Art Fair (Aug 3) also needs volunteers for 2- or 3-hour shifts to help setup or work in the ACCC booth.  If you are interested, please fill out the form on the Victoria Fine Art Fair page to indicate your availability.  Event coordinator, Sue Thompson Steenhoven, will contact you to confirm and provide details.

Thank you for your support of the Arts Consortium of Carver County!

New ACCC Membership Process

We are thrilled to announce that the Arts Consortium of Carver County has implemented a new way to manage our ACCC Membership. We wanted an integrated system that would allow us to be more efficient and cost-effective as well as elevate our Member experience.

All of our paid Members have been imported into our new system and you now have your own Membership Account where you can go to see your Membership status, and your billing options and keep your contact information up-to-date.

To manage your Membership Account with the ACCC, please:
Go to the member account page
Click on the Request Password option
Enter your email address. Note – please use the email we used to send this to you today.
Hit the Request Password button.
Check your email for the password message and follow the instructions in that email.
Once you are logged into your account, you can change your password and update your information.

If the first email address you try doesn’t work, check your spam folder in your email program to see if the message went there. You may also try other email addresses to see if they are correct. If you run into trouble or have questions, contact Scott Werner at admin@artsofcarvercounty.org.

IMPORTANT – For Artists (Visual, Literary, Music, and Theater/Dance)

If you already had an Artist Profile, we have imported your bio/description into your account for your new Artist Membership Directory Listing.

Please ADD your images, make any necessary edits/updates, and add links to your social media accounts. Within your account, you can also review and renew your membership. Visit your genre Directory – there are several artists who have completed this step already and you can see their listings as an example.
