Inspired by Winter: an Evening of Music and Literature – Call For Artists Jan. 27

Inspired by Winter: an Evening of Music and Literature – Call for Artists January 27, 2022

The Literary Committee and Music Committee of ACCC invite you to be part of an evening of music and literature that will warm your heart through themes of Starry Nights, Winter Sundays, Home Blue, or Missing You.  If you would like to read or perform, choose one of those themes for yourself and create a musical piece or a literary work to be presented on January 27, 2022, at the Chaska Community Center.
The music or literary work does not have to include the words of the theme, just the sentiment or idea of it.  Music can be an instrumental or a song.  Writers and musicians will perform only one piece and should limit their piece to no more than 5 minutes.   If you have questions about the event, please contact Steve Kelzer kelzer2025@gmail.com or Susan Coultrap-McQuin coultrap@gmail.com .  We are looking forward to this evening of collaboration between musicians and writers.  We hope you will join us!

Welcome Back Open Reading June 29

Welcome Back Open Reading

The Literary Committee of the Arts Consortium of Carver County invites you to join us for a “Welcome Back” Open Reading at the Chaska Community Center on June 29 at 7pm in the Theater of the Chaska Community Center.  Poets and Prose writers are invited to share their work at the open mic.  Please limit your selection(s) to 5 minutes in length in order to allow as many as possible to read. This is a good opportunity to read a recent publication, something you wrote last year, or a piece from a new book.

We have been separated for so long by the pandemic, we’d like to use this open reading as an opportunity to welcome each other back to in-person events.  A bonus of the evening will be the open ACCC gift shop and a chance to see the gallery exhibit Express Yourself in Purple in honor of Prince.

Shakespeare’s Audiences: Then & Now

You’re Invited to this Virtual Event

Shakespeare’s Audiences: Then & Now

A Shakespeare play is not really understood unless we can experience the give and take of an audience surrounding actors playing seriously with the script. The scripts that Shakespeare wrote included the audience in the performance, but that significant element has been left out of most modern performances which remove the audience to a darkened space where they can…sleep, instead of listen and respond.  Walter Cannon will discuss a number of places in a number of plays wherein the audience is built into the script, where the plays really make no sense without the audience.

DETAILS
Walter Cannon, Professor Emeritus of Central College, will talk about Shakespeare’s Audiences:  Then and Now. He will discuss how Shakespeare expected the audiences of his plays to be involved, unlike the way in which the audiences sit away from the stage in the dark these days.  If you are a fan of Shakespeare, you will want to hear this talk.  You may register for the event by emailing literary@artsofcarvercounty.org no later than November 8, 2020.  The Zoom link will be sent out to those who register.  The talk is designed for all who love Shakespeare, whether you are now a student or if you are an older lover of Shakespeare. Please join us for this event and invite your friends to participate also. Professor Cannon will answer questions after his talk.

Details
Listeners might hear a piece debating “Happy Holidays” versus “Merry Christmas,” warm poetic recollections or even this, from an Army veteran: I spent Christmas Eve 1969 in a below-ground sleeping hooch with mortar shells raining down on our firebase. Three other men huddled with me, and I have to confess it was impossible in those moments to embrace “Peace on earth, good will towards men.” One heavy shell exploded very close, knocking a music box my wife had sent me off the little shelf above my cot. It began playing “Silent Night,” an enormous incongruity as we waited for the next blast. It never came, as though divine command had interceded. We sat there amazed, listening to that tinkling box. And it was exactly what each one of us needed to hear.
