Welcome to the ACCC!
Artist Conversations
Create community with artists! We are excited to host Artist Conversations, a monthly gathering of artists to share and discuss their work with each other. Any artistic medium is welcome – bring your writing to share or to get inspiration; show-and-tell your latest creations, work on a piece in the company of others, share marketing strategies or show opportunities and most of all: BUILD COMMUNITY!

What are times that would work for you?  Would coffee and chat on Saturdays mornings work better or Sunday afternoons, maybe there is an evening that you could join us? Please feel free to email AbigailBlytheArt@gmail.com on times that would work for you, artists, to meet other artists and talk about our work, business, and anything else on your minds.

Gatherings are held every 2nd Wednesday of the month, 6 – 8:00 PM in the ACCC Gift Shop and we invite you to bring noshes to share, if you are able.

The next Artist Conversations will be January 11th.

Artist of the Month:
Morgan Leigh

Hello! My name is Morgan Leigh. My collection of art is my love letter to impressionism. I’ve always loved the work of the 19th century impressionists; In my work, I translate those same ideas of light and color into Minnesotan scenes. I am less concerned about subject or meaning than I am color and composition. I leave my art to be interpreted by the viewer in whatever way they seem fit. On occasions I have described my work as art as seen through “rose colored glasses.”This is because with my body of work, I purposefully saturate and intensify different subtle colors in the source image. I find that doing so helps myself and others to see the ray of colors that surround us in even the most mundane subjects.

My tagline is Leighbrightsea because I have been learning Mandarin since I was 12 years old; in my first class I was given the moniker of 海明 by my teacher which translates to “bright sea.” Leigh Bright Sea.

Artist of the Month – Elizabeth Schwerm

“Being in the woods fills my soul.

Photography has changed the way I see the world. Suddenly I am aware of the details. I notice the colors, shadows, light and reflections. Everything around me is amplified. My pictures are eclectic but I am especially drawn to rural scenes.

I share my photographs on Instagram and have over 4000 followers. My photos have been shown on WCCO and in the StarTribune. I was thrilled when HOM Furniture purchased several of my photographs, reproduced them to look like oil paintings, and can be seen throughout their stores.”

Literary Info

NaNoWriMo 2022
Starting November 1st, writers all over the country will be celebrating NaNoWriMo! Not sure what NaNoWriMo is? It’s short for National Novel Writing Month, a yearly adventure for writers of all levels to challenge themselves to write 50,000 words in 30 days. If you are interested in learning more about this exciting writing event, please check out www.nanowrimo.org for more details and to register your writing project. Speaking of NaNoWriMo… there are many options around Carver county for taking part in NaNoWriMo, here are just a couple:

  • The Waconia Writers Group is hosting a series of write-ins on Monday evenings in November, in honor of National Novel Writing Month. WWG members will be gathering to work on their writing projects, share resources/advice/camaraderie, and some of them might even immerse themselves in the challenge of writing a novel in 30 days! Bring a project! Write! Enjoy some snacks and the company of your writing peers. Come when you can, and stay as long as you want. You don’t have to be participating in NaNoWriMo (or writing a novel) to join in on the fun! The Waconia Writers Group Write-Ins are every Monday in November, 6:30 pm-8 pm at the Waconia Library near the magazine area. For more information, contact Jen Anderson at waconiawriters@gmail.com.
  • Starting Monday, November 7th, the Chanhassen Library will be hosting NaNoWriMo Meetups. These Meetups will take place weekly on Mondays in November, from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm in the Longfellow Room in the Chan library. For more information, go to www.carverlib.org and go to the Events & Registrations tab.

Special Spotlight on the Waconia Writers Group

We are writers of all genres and experience continually learning from each other as we grow as writers. We have members who are just beginning their writing journeys, members who are actively pursuing publication…. and everyone in between! Our tools range from notebooks to laptops, to cocktail napkins, to our ability to tell a story from memory.

WWG MISSION: To offer an open and encouraging environment in which to share, read, discuss and celebrate our work.

WWG VALUES: We are serious about our work but don’t take ourselves too seriously. We’re respectful, curious, supportive and – most of all – have fun with our writing.

Looking Ahead to 2023 and Call to Action!

The Literary Committee is busy working on scheduling a jam-packed year of open readings, contests, art festival appearances, classes, and more! If there are certain events you’d like to see the Literary Committee sponsor or an event/class you’d like to run, please let us know! Contact the Literary Committee at literary@artsofcarvercounty.org, using “Event Ideas” in the subject line.

Putting together a fantastic schedule of events also takes manpower. The Literary Committee is looking for those literary-minded folks to step up and help ensure our events run smoothly. We’d love to see fresh faces on our committee with exciting new ideas! If you are interested in becoming more active in the ACCC Literary Committee, send an email to Literary Committee Head Amy Gregg at literary@artsofcarvercounty.org, with “Committee Interest” in the subject line.

New Barn Quilt – Members Project

Anne Krocak, Cologne, received a grant from the MN State Arts Board and the Clean Water Land & Legacy Amendment to create a barn quilt depicting connections between disabled people and the importance of celebrating diversity in our community.  The barn quilt will be installed in Carver County and a photograph of the barn quilt will be displayed on the digital billboard in St. Boni as a conversation starter with linked social media. An artist-led community forum creating a more inclusive community will happen later this year.

Anne included Artist and friend Kristin Lebben, Victoria, along with other women with disabilities, worked together to design the quilt.  It was a labor of love that brought to the forefront the importance of everyone in the community.  This barn quilt is dedicated to raising the visibility and voices of women who are vulnerable and those that feel they need to hide their disabilities. The quilt includes women that have been excluded from vitally important conversations that directly impact them and their communities.

The project frames the conversations around women with disabilities in a visually accessible format that is celebrated in our local community, the barn quilt. Quilts in this country have a very long history of being women’s work and an art form for the women creating them. What began as an art of necessity began to flourish into a full-blown medium that included deep symbolism and over time, slowly eroded the demarcation between craft and art. Beyond their utilitarian importance, quilts were a place to tell a visual story, create meaningful patterns, and even convey messages like for the Underground Railroad. Quilting history is one of the voiced opinions, that raised awareness, and indeed, social reform.

The Women with Disabilities Barn Quilt embraces the deep history of this art form and contributes to this tradition, using symbolism to bridge the conversation around inclusion and equity in our community.

Krocak, who has lived with multiple sclerosis for more than 30 years, understands the importance and power of moving beyond any perceived limitations and works to bring this awareness and accessibility to all of her public art pieces.  Anne deeply believes that art can spur social change. Using art to bring marginalized people into the center of their community is one of my passions. She is dedicated to visually depicting the unheard voice, bringing “what matters” into public view by creating accessible interactive art pieces such as concrete sculptures/benches, mosaics, barn quilts, murals, mobiles, photographs, and interactive temporary installations. Anne has won numerous awards and created public art throughout Minnesota and the US, including the Kennedy Center in DC,  Public Arts St. Paul, and ArtSage, Children’s Hospital Minneapolis/Campus, Minnesota Creative Artists and Aging Network, ArtsAge, Senior Living Communities throughout MN. In 2009 she received the Jahney-Arts Access Award from VSA Minnesota, recognizing her as an outstanding artist educator of the Year. In 2011 received a National Fellowship from VSA National and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.

Kristin Lebben, Victoria, who has lived with chronic pain and other disabilities her whole life, knows that when everyone contributes solutions are better. When Kristin is not creating metal sculptures or selling her photographs she is raising awareness of critical environmental issues.  Kristin is an award-winning multi-modal artist who likes to ask her viewers to look deeper at her works. She knows that art has the ability to help people view things from perspectives; perspectives they otherwise may not be able to access.  Lebben strives to harness this power in both her private and public pieces. Kristin has worked on many public art pieces including a stained glass project in Chicago for Habitat for Humanity, filming at the World Summit on Sustainable Development, and the “We All Belong Project” in Chaska. She has worked in photojournalism, as a photographer for an environmental group and has shown her work in the upper midwest for over 30 years.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Year-End Update from our Executive Director

As we look forward to 2022, we look forward with anticipation and optimism. I am so excited for the future of the Arts Consortium of Carver County! This past year our community of artists has done some really amazing things; from exhibits, concerts, literary events, festivals, and much more. We have had the opportunity to foster meaningful art in our community and help support local artists.

This past year the store saw record-breaking sales, putting us over 42% higher than last year’s numbers. This meant that we were able to financially support our artists greater than we ever have. This is in a big part thanks to the volunteers who helped support and sustain the ACCC gift shop. If you helped us by fulfilling shifts in the gift shop this year, we are so grateful and thankful for you! As an organization, we project higher sales next year and will continue to pursue successful strategies to foster growth and attain our goals.

2021 has not been without its challenges, and in spite of COVID-19 and many non-profits being forced to shut down, we hold steadfast in our mission and will continue to serve the arts in Carver County. “The Arts Consortium of Carver County strengthens our community through the arts – and cultivates the arts through the community.” Thank you all for helping support the ACCC through these turbulent times and for your continued contributions!

A few highlights from this past year include signing a three-year lease for our gift shop at the Chaska Community Center, bringing on a new Executive Director, creating an educational partnership with the Integrated Arts Academy, appointing Amy Stocking as our new accountant, hiring Scott Werner as our new website manager, and welcoming many new members to our board. This year we have focused on strengthening our leadership and diversifying our Board of Directors, including Katie Trent accepting the nomination to serve as Board Treasurer, Hannah Johnson accepting the nomination to serve as Board Secretary, Nicole John and Abigail Davisson running our new social media initiative, and Cindy Anderson serving as our interim president.

We have some wonderful things in store for you this year including a whole line-up of concerts, literary events, classes, and gallery exhibits. Please make sure to follow us on our website and social media to keep up to date with upcoming events. The best way you can support the Arts Consortium moving into next year would be to renew your memberships, submit art for the exhibits, and to show up to these spectacular events that we have planned for you!

I want to specifically thank Katie Trent for making these wonderful newsletters! She does a fabulous job on these every month and she volunteers a lot of time to be able to keep us all updated. If you see her, please make sure to thank her!

Finally, I want to thank the Arts Consortium for hiring me as the Executive Director this year. Thank you for the support from the Board of Directors, members, volunteers, and Cindy Anderson. I sincerely look forward to 2022, and I hope to continue to make meaningful changes to better serve the organization for years to come.

Artist Spotlight – Katie Trent

Katie Trent has no formal art training, but has been working with glass for over 20 years and relies on the artistic genes passed down by her Architect dad and Fine Arts Major mom. She notes that all of her siblings create art in one form or another – from woodworking to textiles to graphic design. Katie started creating stained glass windows after taking a couple of community education classes that taught the basic techniques of creating a copper foil or Tiffany-style piece. Always the ambitious one, the second window she ever made was a full-sized 2’x4’ window insert for her parents! During these last 2 decades, Katie has learned more about creating glass art and has expanded into glass mosaics and recently, glass fusing. She continues to learn and work on new techniques inspired by her own imagination and others. Katie’s greatest fulfillment as an artist is creating a custom stained glass piece. She states “There is no better feeling than taking someone’s vision for what they want and turning it into a work of art that will be enjoyed for years to come.” Katie continues to teach classes at Glass Endeavors in Minneapolis, in her home, and at the Chaska Community Center/ACCC collaboration. You can find her on Facebook: Trent Art Glass. She also has a website that shows galleries of her work: www.trentartglass.com.

Artist Spotlight – Abigail Davisson

Abigail Blythe Davisson has a BFA in Photography from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. Since her graduation, she has worked in the education field with a focus on teens. While living and teaching in Seoul, South Korea for four years, she had access to a darkroom and continued to express her creativity through photography. When Abigail returned to Minnesota in 2013, there wasn’t the access to a darkroom and she very quickly realized she needed a different artistic outlet. She started to explore oil painting and now Abigail spends the majority of her time painting in her studio when she’s not working and job coaching. She has been exploring color and form, mostly through abstract animals and insects.

Here are examples of her work:

Calling for Musicians and Writers

Get your creative hat on and get ready for a new and unique event planned for January. The Literary Committee and Music Committee of ACCC invite you to be part of an evening of music and literature that will warm your heart through themes of Starry Nights, Winter Sundays, Home Blue, or Missing You. If you would like to read or perform, choose one of those themes for yourself and create a musical piece or a literary work to be presented on January 27, 2022, at the Chaska Community Center. The music or literary work does not have to include the words of the theme, just the sentiment or idea of it. Music can be an instrumental or a song. Writers and musicians will perform only one piece and should limit their piece to no more than 5 minutes. If you have questions about the event, please contact Steve Kelzer at music at artsofcarvercounty.org  or Susan Coultrap-McQuin at literary@artsofcarvercounty.org. We are looking forward to this evening of collaboration between musicians and writers. We hope you will join us!

If you have any questions about upcoming Literary Events, please contact any member of the Literary Committee of the ACCC at literary@artsofcarvercounty.org, or the ACCC office/Gift Shop at 952-443-3200.

Arts Center Shop & Welcome our Newest Volunteer!

Thank you for choosing to SHOP at the ACCC Arts Center Gift Shop and Gallery. We appreciate your support and we look forward to seeing you soon!

We’d like to welcome one of our newest volunteers (and artists), Gail McMillan. Gail is a Minnesotan through and through. She grew up in Mendota Heights and has lived in Minnetonka for 45 years. Her mother was a painter, so she had that artistic influence from an early age.

Gail creates beautiful beaded jewelry and will start selling her creations at the Art Shop this month. She began making jewelry over 10 years ago, selling to friends and family, and now to a broader audience. She belongs to the Upper Midwest Bead Society and has recently taught a few classes via Zoom.
Her other interests include golf, reading, cooking, and gardening. Stop by and welcome Gail as she learns the ropes at the Arts Center Gift Shop!

Our Gift Shop doors are open Wednesday-Friday 11-6 and Saturday 9-4. We invite you to consider volunteering at the Arts Center. It’s a great way to learn more about the ACCC and see what’s for sale as our inventory is constantly being updated. We offer complete training, no retail sales experience necessary. Simply complete the Volunteer Form on our website and we will get you in touch with a trainer.

Consider becoming a volunteer and working with our other artists and volunteers!

Any ACCC Member with artwork in our Gift Shop or in an Exhibit who works 6+ hours in the Arts Center Gift Shop in a given month will earn an extra 10% commission on the sale of their work for that month. Artist Spotlight – Susan Coultrap-McQuin

Susan Coultrap-McQuin is a poet, retired educator, world traveler, and native prairie gardener. She is also a past ACCC Board Member and Volunteer. She continues to be active with our ACCC Literary Group!

Susan loves the challenge of writing poems that invite readers to see the world in new ways — from the smallest leaf to the largest cities. Her poems have appeared in journals such as the Talking Stick, The Moccasin, Songs of Eretz Poetry Review, and in recent pandemic anthologies, including Capsule Stories Isolation Edition, The ACCC Pandemic Arts Journal, and This Was 2020. She also finds time to help organize the annual poetry contest for the Arts Consortium of Carver County.

Susan is also pleased to announce the October publication of a new chapbook, What We Bring Home, by the Poetry Box Press, currently in pre-publication. In What We Bring Home, Susan reflects on what she has learned about herself and the world by venturing beyond American shores, first as a young Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines during the Vietnam War and years later as a tourist in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

Her elegantly crafted poems invite the reader to travel with her, to see anew the sights of Southeast Asia, and to confront the ambiguous truths of cross-cultural interactions. In image-rich poetry, Coultrap-McQuin ponders how history and culture have shaped her views and experiences. Like the souvenirs we bring home, these poems speak to the heart of who we are and why we venture to distant shores. For more information on the book and purchasing it please visit: thepoetrybox.com/bookstore/what-we-bring-home.

ArtMatters Newsletter

Welcome to the ACCC ArtMatters Newsletter for December 2020

Greetings,
As we reflect on this past year, we remain thankful. We are humbled by the good we see in our community. We are grateful for the support and friendships in our close-knit community. And, we thank you for being part of the ACCC family. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we wish you all a safe, healthy and happy holiday season.
All the best,
Cynthia Anderson
ACCC President

The ACCC participated in the #GivingTuesday campaign on December 1, 2020. If you missed it, you can still donate through December 24th!

GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.
GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past 8 years, this idea has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

We rely on donations, sponsorships, memberships, grants, and contributions to support our initiatives and programs throughout the year. We work to fulfill our mission of elevating the arts within our communities. If you’d like to make a year-end donation, we have open arms for your support. We accept donations from individuals, families, charitable funds, estates, charitable organizations, businesses, schools, government agencies and nonprofits. You don’t need to be an artist to support the ARTS!

As a 501(c)3, the Arts Consortium of Carver County is a registered charitable organization. Your Donation should be 100% tax deductible. Please verify with your accountant. Thank you for your support!

You can still donate to our #GivingTuesday campaign through December 24th via our website.
